Common Air Conditioning Unit Problems

In general terms, air conditioning units make for extremely rugged and high-quality products, meaning that you’re unlikely to experience regular faults or breakdowns.

Like any type of heating or cooling system, however, an air conditioning system can experience problems that prevent it from operating properly over time.

Some of these issues are more commonplace than others, and identifying these can help your air conditioning system to function to its full potential. Here are some of the most troublesome problems:

3 Common Air Conditioning Unit Problems

1. Refrigerant Leaks

Air conditioners run on refrigerants, which are contained within the coils of the unit and are essentially liquid agents that dehumidify indoor air.

If your air conditioning system is low on refrigerant, there may be a couple of reasons for this. It may have been undercharged at the point of installation, for example, whilst the issue may also be caused by an unseen leak.

In the case of the latter, attempting to add refrigerant to your unit is not a viable solution. Instead, you’ll need to work with a trained and accredited technician to fix the leak at source, before testing the effectiveness of the repair and charging the system correctly.

2. Inadequate Maintenance and Gradual Decline

Like any type of heating and cooling system, it’s imperative that you look to maintain your air conditioning system proactively and as frequently as possible.

This can help you to identify potential issue before they become chronic, which can in turn translate into significant cost savings over time.

In the case of your air conditioning system, you’ll definitely need to ensure that the unit’s filters and coils are regularly maintained and free from dirt. This will help to optimise the performance of your system over a sustained period of time, whilst it will also minimise the risk of the unit’s compressor failing prematurely.

3. Electronic Control Failure

On the topic of the unit’s compressor and individual fans, these components can also see their electronic controls worn out over time.

This can be caused in instances where your air conditioning unit is regularly switched on and off, whilst it’s also a relatively common fault for systems that are large or oversized.

The gradual corrosion of wire and terminals is also a problem for many modern air conditioning units, so you should ensure that all electrical connections should be checked thoroughly during a professional service.

Who Should you Turn too When Servicing your Unit?

As you can see, there are significant benefits to having your air conditioning system regularly serviced, but the question that remains is where should you turn to carry this out?
